There is something powerful about going back to the beginning.
Before the battles. Before the mistakes. Before the disappointments. Before life became complicated.
There was God.
Genesis 1 opens with words many of us have heard countless times:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1
Before anything else existed, God was already there.
And as I read Genesis 1–3 today, I was reminded that sometimes renewal begins by going back to what God established before everything else started competing for our attention.
God Created With Intention
Throughout Genesis 1, we see a pattern.
God speaks.Something happens.God evaluates what He created.And He calls it good.
Light wasn’t an accident.
The sky wasn’t an accident.
The land wasn’t an accident.
The vegetation wasn’t an accident.
The sun, moon, stars, animals, and everything filling the earth weren’t accidents.
Creation was intentional.
Then God created humanity.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:27
That changes how we should see ourselves.
Your identity did not begin with your career.
It didn’t begin with your accomplishments.
It didn’t begin with your failures.
It didn’t begin with what somebody said about you.
Your identity begins with the fact that you were created by God and made in His image.
Sometimes we spend years trying to become somebody when God is calling us to understand who He created us to be.
Spiritual renewal often starts right there.
Before asking, What am I supposed to do next?
Who did God create me to be?
God Established Relationship Before Responsibility
Genesis 2 gives us a closer look at Adam’s creation and his life in the garden.
God gives Adam responsibility. He places him in the garden to work it and take care of it.
But Adam’s purpose didn’t begin with work.
It began with God.
That’s important.
We live in a culture that constantly asks:
What are you building?
What are you accomplishing?
What’s next?
How productive were you today?
But Genesis reminds us that before there was a business, ministry, platform, assignment, title, or responsibility, there was relationship with God.
We can become so busy doing things for God that we neglect simply being with God.
And eventually, even good work becomes exhausting when we’re trying to do it disconnected from the One who gave us the assignment.
Maybe renewal doesn’t require adding something else to your schedule.
Maybe it requires returning God to the center of it.
The Enemy Questioned What God Said
Then we arrive at Genesis 3.
The serpent approaches Eve with a question:
“Did God really say…?”

Notice the strategy.
He didn’t begin by telling Eve to rebel against God.
He began by creating doubt about God’s Word.
Did God really say that?
Did God really say you are forgiven?
Did God really say He will provide?
Did God really say you are called?
Did God really say you should trust Him?
Did God really say you need to wait?
Did God really say obedience matters?
Sometimes the greatest spiritual battles aren’t happening around us.
They’re happening over what we believe.
That’s why knowing Scripture matters.
When you know what God said, you become better equipped to recognize what contradicts what He said.
Shame Made Them Hide
After Adam and Eve disobeyed God, something changed immediately.
They became aware of their nakedness.
They covered themselves.
Then they hid.
Genesis 3:8 says they hid from the Lord among the trees of the garden.
Sin produced shame, and shame produced hiding.
And we still hide.
Maybe not behind trees.
We hide behind busyness.
We hide behind accomplishments.
We hide behind titles.
We hide behind smiles.
We hide behind “I’m fine.”
We hide parts of ourselves because we’re afraid of what will happen if they’re exposed.
But then something beautiful happens.
God comes looking for them.
“Where are you?”
Genesis 3:9
God wasn’t asking because He had lost Adam’s location.
The question gave Adam an opportunity to recognize where he was.
And maybe that’s a question worth sitting with today:
Where are you?
Where are you spiritually?
Where are you emotionally?
Where have you become distant from God?
Where have you allowed shame, fear, disappointment, distraction, or disobedience to make you hide?
God already knows where you are.
The question is whether you’re willing to come out of hiding and meet Him there.
Renewal Begins With Returning
Genesis 1–3 shows us the beauty of God’s original design, the devastating consequences of sin, and the beginning of humanity’s need for redemption.
And yet even after Adam and Eve sinned, God didn’t disappear.
He came looking for them.
That speaks loudly to me.
Because maybe you’ve made mistakes.
Maybe you’ve wandered.
Maybe you’ve gotten distracted.
Maybe your relationship with God hasn’t looked the way you wanted it to look.
Maybe you’re beginning this journey knowing you need a spiritual reset.
Start here.
You don’t have to pretend.
You don’t have to perform.
You don’t have to have everything figured out.
Come back to God.Come back to His Word.Come back to His presence.Come back to the beginning.
Because the same God who spoke light into darkness is still able to speak into the dark places of your life.
And this may be the beginning of something new.

Questions to Sit With
- Have I been allowing my accomplishments, responsibilities, or other people’s opinions to define me more than God’s Word?
- Is there something God has said that I’ve started questioning because of circumstances, fear, or outside voices?
- Where have I been hiding from God instead of bringing that area honestly before Him?
Today’s Prayer
Let Your Word Transform Me
Father, thank You for reminding me that my story begins with You. You created me intentionally, and You created me in Your image. Help me remember who I am before I become consumed with what I have to do.
Show me the places where I have allowed other voices to become louder than Your Word. Give me discernment to recognize anything that contradicts what You have spoken.
And Father, show me where I’ve been hiding. Give me the courage to bring every part of my life into Your presence. As I begin this journey through Your Word, renew my mind, restore my hunger for You, and draw me closer to You.
Let this be more than reading Scripture. Let Your Word transform me.
